What Is Martial Arts?

For all its complexity, there is one thing about what is known as martial arts: a common interest. Martial arts are basically codified traditions and systems of self-defense; martial-arts competitions; military and police applications; mental, physical, and spiritual growth; the preservation of an ethnic group's unique culture; and even entertainment; all practices that have existed since time immemorial.

The various forms of this discipline range from martial-art forms to traditional Kung fu techniques; but in most cases the emphasis is on physical fitness, mental awareness, and self-discipline. But, more importantly, martial-arts trainers seek to enhance their students' fighting and survival capabilities by teaching them how to better defend themselves against their enemies.

Martial arts can be broadly classified into two: internal and external. Internal discipline is concerned with the internal systems of the body and mind. An internal discipline is often associated with Kung Fu, Karate, and Tai Chi. External discipline refers to the methods and systems of martial arts used in competition.

Most of us would agree that what is considered as Martial Arts actually spans thousands of years. The earliest recorded records date back to Ancient China. There were several schools of martial arts in existence during the ancient times. The art that was developed during those times can be classified as internal disciplines, while the external systems of martial arts were developed during the time of the wars.

As we move towards the modern day, we find that a variety of styles of self-defense are being developed by practitioners. Some are aimed at developing the physical strength, while others aim at developing the mental strength. This is why, among many Martial Artists, some would argue that there is nothing wrong with practicing an exercise regimen that focuses primarily on one's physical strength.

In this context, you might wonder how one should proceed with respect to learning to defend oneself. To put it differently, one could either learn to defend himself in the manner prescribed in his/her style of Martial Arts, or use a system based upon another style of Martial Arts that has a more extensive list of drills and exercises. In some cases, you may need to train in both in order to maximize your chances of success.

One must also remember that what is considered as Martial Arts must be approached with care. and utmost seriousness, if it is to help the student succeed.

Before you enroll yourself in any Martial Arts class, make sure that you are not only training for self-defence, but for other goals as well. The classes must also teach you how to be a responsible citizen, a contributing member of society, a responsible citizen, a responsible spouse, a responsible parent, and a responsible adult.

It should also be borne in mind that while martial arts might be good for your health, they are not for the purpose of losing weight, improving your stamina, or increasing your muscle mass. So when you attend a Martial Arts class, make sure that you know exactly what you want to achieve from the class.

A good training program must also have a good balance between learning techniques and exercises. Some of the martial arts which are most popular today are Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Hapkido, Brazilian Jujitsu, and Taekwondo. These are also the most common types of Martial Arts that you will see in most private and public institutions of Martial Arts. Also known as Taekwondo, Kung Fu is a traditional form of Martial Arts which is a mixture of the traditional fighting techniques from China and Japan with the use of the short-bladed and long-bladed weapons. Some of the more famous schools of Kung Fu are the Karate and Shaolin academies which have been around for centuries. Kung Fu is widely taught in the United States and in many of the professional mixed martial arts.
