Autoimmune diseases occur when the body attacks. Here, the immune system attacks healthy cells of the body. One of the few autoimmune diseases that should be monitored is Sjogren's syndrome.

Sjogren's syndrome is an immune system disorder identified by the two most common symptoms. Two symptoms include dry eyes and mouth.

Sensations such as burning eyes, itching or feeling of sand will certainly occur in people with this syndrome. Coupled with dry mouth that makes it difficult to swallow, even when talking.

Citing the Mayo Clinic, this disease is often accompanied by other immune system disorders such as arthritis and lupus.

Sjogren's syndrome can affect people of all ages. It's just that women aged 40 and over are vulnerable to this syndrome.

In addition, this syndrome is also common in people with rheumatism. In the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, about 60% of patients with this syndrome have secondary diseases due to autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatism.

In the United States, it is estimated that two out of four people have this syndrome. Nearly one million of them have been clearly diagnosed.

This syndrome will attack the glands responsible for producing tears and saliva. Mucous secretions from the upper and lower respiratory tract may be decreased in patients with Sjogren's syndrome. This can cause drying of the nose, throat and trachea. Worse, this disease also causes a chronic dry cough.

In addition, this syndrome can also lead to several complications.

Starting from cavities, fungal infections in the mouth, blurred vision, corneal lesions, pain and numbness of the hands and feet.

So far, it is not known what causes autoimmune diseases, including Sjogren's syndrome. Scientists believe that certain genes expose some people to the risk of developing this syndrome.

Beyond that, they suspect there are other mechanisms that trigger the development of Sjogren's syndrome in the body, such as viral infections or certain bacteria.
